What Should We Do When Falling Into A New Season?

As we close the doors to the summer months and start to open the windows to fall, it is important that we prepare our minds and bodies for a smooth transition. While the seasons change, it impacts the daylight hours, air pressure, foods, temperature, and socialization. Below are some go-to tips to help you with a smooth transition and healthy tasks that will keep you in tip-top shape.

1) Start taking a Vitamin D supplement. We get most of our Vitamin D from the sun, therefore, our intake decreases when the weather is colder since we spend most of our time inside during the fall/winter seasons. If you find you are not getting outside much, a Vitamin D supplement can boost your mood and immune system.

2) Take some time to yourself. Autumn and winter are the Earth’s way of telling us to slow down. As with the trees and their leaves falling, we as humans can take this time to review and cleanse our worlds. Decluttering the house, cleaning out the garage, or even tidying up the 1000s of spam emails in the inbox. All of these will give you some self-care. Start a journal or track your moods to get more in touch with how you are feeling.

3) Get your yearly check-up. Self-explanatory! No one likes sniffling and aching and sneezing and coughing getting in the way of life. We have had a rough 18months and survived. Let's make sure we are taking care of our bodies. Take the time to show up for yourself.

4) Get yourself ready for Daylight Savings Time. Go to bed earlier when you can (tough one I know), especially the week before the clocks change. Longer periods of darkness = longer periods of sleep!

5) Make some plans for the cold months. In the winter, we tend to hibernate if we don’t have things to keep us busy. At home, moments can bring some great memories for all. Family game night, candle-making, or even a movie marathon. Hibernating isn't a bad thing, just be sure to add some fresh air to the day

6) Moisturize your skin. Harsh temperatures can make your skin dry. Keeping hydration high and adding an oil-based body moisturizer can help reduce this. Making at-home face masks can always be fun and a great way to laugh! (P.S You still should be wearing sunscreen).

7) Buy in-season food. With a new season come new foods. Beets, broccoli, cabbage, eggplant, kale, pumpkin, broths, roasted squash, roots, and sautéed dark leafy greens are all great choices. Fresh fall foods always make for a great-smelling home.

8) Wear layers and protect your body from the dropping temperature. Make sure you have gloves, a scarf, earmuffs, a winter coat, warm socks, and snow boots! Being prepared will reduce your feeling cold and reduce stress/anxiety about feeling the cold.

9) Be kind to yourself.  Here are some truths. The holidays can cause weight gain, the shorter days can cause low mood, and the flu season can cause sickness. Listen to your body and give it what it needs, and don’t beat yourself up! Try reframing negative thoughts into positive ones. Do your best daily and be kind to yourself.
